Globetrot Serot : People with backpacks - Analucia

My style of travel is to be curious, unpredictable, and to be ever evolving. As a sociologist most of my experiences aboard are centered around cultural exchanges or language immersions.

When traveling as a backpacker you are overcoming challenges all the time.  This is why I am addicted to being on the road. I speak six languages, but French pronunciation always gets to me. I faced some nervousness to speak French when dealing  with some visa confusion in a small country in Africa. I remember being in my head, but then watched myself grow in confidence as the situation got serious. I had no choice but to lean in my French speaking skills to handle the issue with the local police.

I also only became a US citizen in 2011, and have made about a million border crossings before 2011, that turned into horror stories when holding a passport from a country that is incorrectly defined as “third-world”. Getting my US Passport immediately changed the way I was perceived all around the world.  What would once take an hour at passport control, now would take me minutes.

Both of these stories have etched my travel experience and stand out as defining moments over the course of my travels. Out of the defining and challenging come the fun and memorable experiences as well.

Years ago I went diving in Iceland. The next month I was doing a dive  in Mexico, and on that dive I lost my GoPro Camera. 9 months later I received a Facebook message from a Reykjavik dive center telling me someone found my GoPro. The person who found it, tracked me down after her was able to see some of the picture on the gopro. I posted a picture of myself out-front of the dive center in Iceland, so he contacted the dive center to found me. I got the contact info from them for the person who found my camera. Sure enough the GoPro made its way from Playa Del Carmen in Mexico, to the shores of Galveston, Texas where it was found on the beach. I was floored to be living this sort of romantic story, but also so taken back how the connection and friendships you make traveling do truly last for a lifetime. I only spent 4 hours at the dive center In Iceland, but almost a year later the people there still remembered me.

The backpacking experience for me is about the friendships I have made. I have family all around the world, and after 15 years of being on the road, I’ve had the opportunity to host and be hosted by friends I’ve met while wandering the Earth.
