Globetrot Serot: People With Backpacks - George

When I travel, I cherish the stories I hear from the other backpackers. Learning about the countries they are from, and what experiences they encounter in daily lives fascinates me.

Before going out as a backpacker, I had a very westerner view of life. My travels have given me a new perspective and open mind about the cultures and the way of living of people from all around the world.

In England I  was Marketing Manager for a ski company. After saving up my holiday time, I took a trip to Guatemala. It was at this time due to the experiences I had, and the people I met, I quit my job in London when I returned home. I now operate a food service van called, Biffen’s Kitchen, feeding hungry surfers at the beach in North Devon. Cooking dishes inspired by the cusines and culture of my travels.

Traveling as a backpacker makes you realize how small the community really is. Joel and I met trekking the Acagtenago Volcano in Guatemala in 2017. Then in 2019, while I was eating my way through the Oaxaca state of Mexico conducting “Market Research” for Biffens Kitchen, I received a whatsapp from him out of the blue. The message was a picture of a phone charger, with the last name Biffen written on it in sharpie. He asked me is this belonged to me, because he found it in a hostel near Oaxaca. Of course, it left it behind when I was in Puerto Escondido. Just happen to work out that Joel was now there at the same time of year traveling in Oaxaca, and was at the same hostel and same room I was just in only a week prior. What a small world, but also magical travel moment.

My name is George Biffen, I am from Brauton, in the United Kingdom.
